Jobs That Crossed My Desk Through July 12

Hi,
I’ve pasted in downloadable Word list of jobs received through July 12th below.  You can find downloadable list of industry meetings as well on my blog. In today’s market, it’s a combination of being well  prepared to provide a solution to  a company or organization’s employee need and having a contact inside to ensure your application gets in front of the hiring manager.

You need to do research on a potential employer so you understand how you meet their need and convey this with a well written targeted resume and  cover letter.

As always I encourage you to network, network, network and stay current in your field through continuing education and attending lectures at industry meetings.  “Sharpening the saw” in your current job function to keep abreast of the latest developments and to make you more competitive  may not require an additional degree or certificate program.  You can often get up to date with a few applied courses such as those taught at the UCSC Extension in Cupertino (and starting in the fall in  Santa Clara at major intersection with 101).   If you want to change life science sectors and/or functions then a more intensive certificate program may be required.  A certificate program in your targeted new area, designed with the needs of post grad working professionals in mind, will help you to develop credentials, including non-confidential projects/documents for your portfolio,  showing you can fulfill the job’s functions.
Some companies require an advanced degree to be considered for certain positions so if that company is your goal and you can’t get in without it, then you might want to undertake a more costly graduate school education.  But again a degree is not the total answer. You still need to have an extensive network and continue to keep learning and growing in your craft.
I’ve listed below free upcoming sessions at the UCSC Extension where you can learn more about certificate programs , also  found at http://www.ucsc-extension.edu/view/bioscience/home,  for your information.

Be sure to check out information about Toby Beth Freedman’s book Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development at end of job list if you are considering a career change.  Also review Susan E. Caldwell’s article about writing resumes on our downloadable list as well.
There are many professionals like Toby and Susan  in our Bay Area industry community who want to see you succeed who can offer useful advice from their experience. But remember to respect their time and  that they are full-time working professionals for whom any free time is precious. You need get out and meet potential new members of your network– I encourage you to support your local universities and professional organizations where you can extend your network and  develop ongoing relationships possible with local industry speakers and instructors who are here over the long haul and just don’t fly in to speak at a for profit course or seminar. Again you need to invest in these organizations through payment for services or with your time  for volunteer based organizations like the Bio2Device Group. “What goes around, comes around”–you need to give to others to ensure there are others there to give to you–it’s a give and take situation–a real community effort to help you build a vibrant career and friendship network.

Much success to you in your search and those with whom you share this information.
Audrey
