Some Takeaways from Personalized Medicine Meeting plus Events and Jobs

Some Takeaways Last Week

I’ve had very interesting week attending the 5th World Personalized Medicine Congress at which I had opportunity to hear about the changing status of molecular diagnostics, genomic testing and fascinating new uses of Big Data, etc. Some discussions that stuck with me:

  • Randy Scott shared information about his newest company InVitae that looks from a more expansive view of a person’s genes. The company merged with Locus together provides 300 genetic conditions in its current testing panel.
  • A panel shared their concerns about potential weakening of patent protection for diagnostics with some discussion on how to overcome the resultant dilemma of diagnostics based on algorithms not being patentable. I didn’t walk away with answers but with a better understanding of situation.
  • Janet Woodcock of the FDA’s CDER shared news about progressive support from her agency for speeding up development of new breakthrough medicines.
  • I was most intrigued with the potential impact of convergence of data from different original software sets being analyzed in one set and some research using big data as source of new relationships leading to drug discoveries.

At a Sidley Austin workshop later in the week, I learned more about FDA and EMEA regulatory changes impacting clinical trials. The especially interesting U.S. issue was the determination of whether the sponsor company or Medicare pays for treatment of Medicare-covered clinical trial patients who have injury incurred in the trial.

There are a lot of exciting innovations afoot which I hope to share in my talk at the Bio2Device Group on Tuesday morning, Feb. 19th.

Notes on My Upcoming Courses

Once again I’ve collected jobs that came across my desk this past week. Note that I am only listing positions in California now as there are sufficient numbers to just focus on them. The positions I listed the previous two weeks are included in the latest issue JobsThatCrossedMyDesk Feb. 3, 2013.

Take care and look at the glass as half full instead of half empty so you face your challenges with positive energy! I needed to use that perspective as I struggled with getting over a nasty cold and its accompanying doldrums.
