Life Science VC Funding Up Plus Events This Coming Week

I’m back from my vacation refreshed and was pleased to find some great news in my mailbox. Quarter two VC funding for life science is up and medtech experienced the highest level of investments in startup companies in five quarters. “In total, the healthcare sector brought in $1.81 billion through 151 deals funded by venture capitalists. The money invested in the last quarter represents a 24% increase over the first quarter of the year when $1.47 billion was invested through 141 deals.” Source: “Q2 Venture Capital Investments in Early-Stage Healthcare Companies Reach Five-Quarter High,” MD&DI, July 16, 2013.

Fierce Biotech reports a surge in biotech venture capital investments in the second quarter in the article “$1.3B VC cash surge buoys biotech as analysts point to a rebound” by John Carroll, July 18, 2013. Investments in first round financing was significantly up while also following 3 months of great IPO numbers.

But in an article covering medical devices Fierce Biotech is not so enthusiastic as MD&DI. They see a positive only in that a slight decline in medical device funding in this quarter is an improvement for the sector over first quarter declines. They attribute this situation to uncertainty of device insurance reimbursement which is scaring away investors. “Exits” for biotech are much clearer than for medtech. Source: “Med tech VC investing remains sluggish, biotech surges,” by Mark Hollmer, July 19, 2013.

I look forward to reading the Money Tree report to see how PWC and the National Venture Capital Association analyze the second quarter funding results.

If you are following the U.S. medical device industry prospects, be sure to attend this week’s Bio2Device Group morning meeting and hear a worldwide regulatory expert Dr. Martine Dehlinger-Kremer, Global Vice President, Regulatory Affairs RPS Research Pharmaceutical Services discuss changing European medical device regulations. The meeting is open to the public and free. See details in list of Audrey’s Picks downloadable from this site or my blog at
